Essay Coaching
Writing a good application essay is hard; you want to make sure it's clear and easy to read,
that your voice is coming through, and that you stand out from all the other applicants, all
within a word limit that really should be bigger. The best way to improve your writing is to
have someone else read it just like a reviewer would–-and that’s where I come in!
What I provide
I provide editing assistance and serve as a writing coach for hire, with a particular focus
on application materials for undergraduate institutions, scholarships and fellowships,
summer research programs, and biomedical graduate programs. I am happy to read and provide
feedback on any academic writing; please reach out below for a consultation!
Qualifications
For every application essay I’ve submitted, I’ve edited several more for
friends and colleagues. I have successfully applied for and received the following:
- The Brown Fellows scholarship, a full-ride scholarship to Centre College in Kentucky
- The Goldwater Scholarship, a nationally competitive award given to only ~450 students
a year pursuing a PhD in a STEM field
- The Mayo Clinic Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, admitted twice in back-to back summers
- The Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, where I am currently pursuing my PhD in
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Why hire help?
Nothing makes an essay better than a second set of eyes. I read the whole essay carefully and provide
detailed feedback and comments, plus an overall summary of its strengths and weaknesses. I can also
schedule zoom consultations to talk through an essay directly and answer any questions directly.
I do not use generative AI at any stage of my review process–your feedback comes from me; a real,
experienced human who will carefully consider the best way to help you.
Pricing
My rate is $75/essay. I will do a full readthrough, compose a short summary of the strengths and
weaknesses of the essay, and leave individual comments and suggestions to improve concision,
word choice, structure, tone and more! I will also schedule a 30 minute zoom meeting with the essay’s
author to go over my feedback and answer any questions they may have.
If you have multiple essays to write responding to similar prompts (“why this school?” college essays,
medical school secondaries, etc), I would suggest sending me only one example–the feedback I give can
then be applied to other versions of the essay.
